The Austrian Empire (1867-1918) was a component of the dual monarchy Austria-Hungary. After the separation of Hungary in 1867 from the former Austrian Empire, the Austrian part of the dual monarchy was informally referred to as Cisleithania, in relation to the river Leitha. The Hungarian part was conversely referred to as Transleithania, as it was seen to be laying beyond the river Leitha, as seen from the countries on the Austrian side of the river.
