The Compact of Free Association (COFA) defines the relationship that three sovereign states — the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau — have entered into as associated states with the United States. Prior to independence they were all part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. All three states are located in the located in Micronesian part of Oceania.
