The Federation of Arab Republics (1972-1977) was a loose confederation between Egypt, Syria and Libya. During its existence there were attempts to make the cooperation deeper by establishing a union within the confederation first between Egypt and Libya, and then between Egypt and Syria. Before the establishment of the confederation in 1972 there had been proposals to create a federation with Egypt, Syria and Sudan. After Libya withdrew in 1977, there was a renewed proposal of a new federation between Egypt, Syria and Sudan, but neither of the attempts were successful.
