The French Community (1958-1960) was the successor to the French Union. Algeria had been an integral part of the Fourth French Republic, and the establishment of the Fifth French Republic introduced a more loose relationship to its former colonies. Within two years the colonial states of the French Community had all declared their independence and its role vanished.
