The Third Reich (English: Third Empire) (1938-1945) was a period when Germany as a national socialist state under the leadership of Adolf Hitler (|), had reached a point where it with the approval of other European states annexed territory from Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1938. In September 1939 Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland igniting a world wide and six year long conflict commonly referred to as World War II. Despite a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union, Germany chose to invade its former ally in June 1941, forcing it to change sides and ally itself with the United States and the United Kingdom. Through a protracted armed conflict the United States, the United Kingdom and the USSR had by May 1945 conquered Germany militarily and defeated the Third Reich along with the Nazi leadership.
