The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a state established on the island of Cyprus following a Turkish military invasion in 1974. Northern Cyprus declared independence in 1983, which has so far only recognized by Turkey. A plan to unite Cyprus by creating a federal state prior to the Republic of Cyprus acceded as a member state to the European Union in 2004 was accepted in a referendum in the north, but the plan failed after it was rejected in a referendum in the south.
