The Government Delegation for Poland (1939-1945) was the highest authority for the Polish Underground State, an alliance of resistance organizations in German-occupied Poland. It was loyal to the Polish government-in-exile and it acted as provisional government until the legitimate government could return safely following the end of the occupation.
Besides the resistance organizations that recognized the authority of the Government-in-Exile in London, there were as also other resistance organizations. Most notably the Communist partisan Armia Ludowa, which was controlled by the Soviet Union.
In August 1944 the Warsaw Uprising was fought against German forces in an ultimately failed attempt to win control over the city of Warsaw before the arrival of the Soviet forces.
