The Rhenish Republic (1923-1924) was an unrecognized state on the west bank of the Rhine in Germany. Its existence would not have been possible without the support of French occupying troops in the Rhineland.
In January 1923 French and Belgian troops had also occupied the Ruhr, where the Palatine Republic (₳|₩) was proclaimed as an autonomous part of the Rhenish Republic. There had been a previous attempt at establishing a Rhenish Republic (1919) (₳|₩) already in 1919, also with French support.
